Tuesday Lobsang Rampa was one of the most controversial writers of the twentieth century. He claimed to be a transmigrated Tibetan lama with extraordinary psychic powers. His critics claimed that he was Cyril Hoskin, an English plumber who had perpetrated one of the greatest literary hoaxes of all time.
In 1955 Lobsang Rampa, also known as Dr Carl Kuan, wrote 'The Third Eye', a bestseller which thrilled the world. It introduced Tibet from the viewpoint of an insider who had studied in the great lamaseries of Lhasa. The richness and depth of Tibetan culture and spirituality was introduced to an audience who had previously only seen the Tibetans as either superstitious, childlike peasants or black magicians. Rampa struck a happy medium by including a unique mixture of every day events with some of the deepest mysteries of Tibet's inner and secret religion.
Fifty years ago Tuesday Lobsang Rampa wrote a bestseller which thrilled the world. Eighteen books followed until his death in 1981 exploring such subjects as:

Karen Mutton is an independent researcher who has been an admirer of Lobsang Rampa since her early teens. In 1998, dismayed by all the negative information about him on the internet, she set out to re-examine the author's claims in the light of current knowledge. She conducted meticulous research using old books, newspapers, magazines and interviews with both critics and supporters of Lobsang Rampa. The resulting book, 'T. Lobsang Rampa- New Age Trailblazer' portrays the author not as a fraud but a genius of the highest order who exerted an enormous influence on the New Age movement.
This is Karen's second book. The first book, 'Tales of the Ancient World' which was published under her maiden name of Karen Carfoot in 1988, was a popular history textbook throughout Australian schools.

I'm also excited to present an article about Lobsang Rampa, and congratulations to author Karen Mutton on some excellent research. I can say without hesitation that I would not be sitting here typing this editorial today if I had not been exposed to the idea of Lobsang Rampa way back in the 1970's. Like many, I was dissapointed to learn via mainstream media that Rampa had been passed off as merely the son of a Cornish plumber, and dismissed as the transmigrated Tibetan Lama that he claimed to be.

If Karen Mutton's Book and two part article commencing this issue are anything to go by, it's time to reconsider the writings of Tuesday Lobsang Rampa.
In this re-assessment of Rampa's influence, Karen Mutton analyses his body of work which helped Trailblaze the way for a Buddism revival and the birth of the New Age movement. His books opened up awareness of Tibetan spiritual and cultural traditions, was well as the horrors perpetrated on the Chinese communists - many years before the world's media were reporting on them. Karen has also consulted people who knew Rampa, including his faithful secretary and companion, Sheelagh Rouse, and utilized newspaper reports as well as memoirs of supporters and critics alike.
